Poet:

The Spider and the Fly A Cautionary Tale

Once upon a time, a spider spoke to a fly, inviting her to his home:
“This path you take every day passes by my humble little house. Come inside; there is comfort and respect waiting for you.”

The fly, however, was cautious. She replied,
“Sir, I know better than to trust a stranger. No matter how sweet your words, I will not step into your trap.”

The spider, not deterred, continued to praise the beauty of his home:
“I have decorated my small house with care curtains on the doors, mirrors on the walls, soft bedding for my guests. Everything is prepared for your comfort.”

The fly listened but remained wary:
“All this may be fine, but don’t expect me to come inside. I will not fall for flattery or fancy words.”

The spider, skilled in flattery, tried again:
“You are blessed with beauty and charm. Surely, anyone who sees you would be captivated. Your presence alone honors my home.”

The fly, however, ignored the sweet words, knowing that flattery often hides hidden motives. But the spider, hungry and cunning, waited patiently. Eventually, when the fly came close enough, he trapped her.

Moral / Lesson:

  • Beware of flattery and deceit. Just because something looks beautiful or sounds pleasing doesn’t mean it is safe.
  • Think before trusting others. The fly’s caution shows the importance of vigilance, but the story also reminds us that danger can strike if one is vulnerable.
  • Hidden motives often disguise themselves in charm and sweet words.
